In a tragic accident yesterday, Georgian luge competitor Nodar Kumaritashvili was killed when he hit the side of the chute and careened over the edge during a practice run at the Vancouver Winter Olympics. Luge is a dangerous sport, and I'm sure that Nodar understood the risks that he was taking, but nonetheless, it is a terrible thing to happen and my sincere condolences go out to his family and friends. To lose life at such a young age is senseless.Olympic officials have announced that the luge competition will continue, but that steps will be taken to make the course safer. I think that it is a good decision to do that and to dedicate the competition to their fallen comrade's memory. I suspect that this is the way that Nodar would have wanted it.
May God bless Nodar's family with serenity and love in this time of their great grief and loss.
